Looking back, 2020 is a year that won’t easily be forgotten. We’ve survived (and are still going through) a pandemic which has yielded itself to an unprecedented shift for our cultural and social well-being. However, we can say that though times have been tricky, we will come out of this stronger and more community-minded than before. We’ve been lucky to have some great clients to work with this building their dream homes and here are a few of the top contenders for home design that we’ve seen emerging this year.

Environmentally Friendly Contemporary Fireplaces

Fireplaces were a statement piece in 2018 and 2019, and they continue to be a statement piece in 2020. With clients continuing to ask for a modern update to their fireplace, many interior designers are elevating the fireplaces while making them minimal as well, leaving a subtle design note in their client’s homes. Clients are also asking for a more environmentally friendly fireplace instead of using the conventional wood-burning and gas fireplaces.  With new innovations, fireplaces are easier to care for and use – these bad boys take up less visual space and are designed to completely blend in.

Dark Painted Doors

Painting an interior door in a rich color not only adds warmth and character to any space but can be paired with beautiful hardware and myriad other home decor ideas.

Fun Bathroom Designs

This has been a staple in the design industry for the last few years and the trend continues to rise. Bathrooms are a great place to experiment and have fun with color, materials, and wallpaper. Wallpaper is definitely making a comeback!

Kitchen Islands with Eat-In-Areas

The kitchen regularly ends up being the hangout area of homes. Many clients are designing kitchens with a kitchen island that drops down to dining height to provide kitchen dining. Not only does it look beautiful, but it will be comfortable as well. What a short trip to the kitchen to do dishes!

Quartz Countertops

Along with fun bathroom designs, engineered quartz countertops are the more eco-friendly approach to countertops. Granite countertops are becoming a thing of the past. Quartz is a great alternative because of its durability and ease of maintenance. You would be surprised by the new styles of quartz and how much they look alike to marble and other natural stones.

Multi-functional Spaces

Let’s face it – more households are experiencing remote working and learning at home this past year. Multi-functional spaces have become extremely relevant in 2020 design trends. Open floor plans? Maybe they’re a trend of the past. Designs of custom homes (and some remodels) have taken to open room plans. Closet and office space – combined. Kitchen and Dining Areas – joined. These types of areas eliminate the need for an entirely separate room!
